Return to the Lord: A Call from the High and Lofty One

**The High and Lofty One Who Dwells in Eternity**

The scorching wind howled through the barren valleys, carrying with it the dust of forgotten altars. The people of Judah had turned their backs on the Lord, seeking solace in the shadows of false gods. Their hearts, once aflame with devotion, had grown cold, their worship hollow. Yet in the midst of their rebellion, the voice of the prophet Isaiah thundered like the roar of many waters, calling them back to the One who sits enthroned above the heavens.

### **The Righteous Perishes, and No One Takes It to Heart**

In the quiet corners of Jerusalem, the righteous man breathed his last. No mourning procession followed his body to the grave, for the people were too consumed with their own pleasures to notice his passing. The devout were swept away, unnoticed, like leaves in a storm. The wicked, however, thrived—their laughter filled the streets, their tables groaned under the weight of stolen wealth. They stretched out upon couches of indulgence, their hearts swelling with pride.

Yet the Lord saw. He saw the widow’s tears, the orphan’s cry, the righteous buried in silence. And His anger burned against those who mocked His ways.

### **The Idolaters and Their False Refuge**

In the hidden groves and upon the high hills, they gathered—men and women who had forsaken the covenant. They sacrificed not to the Lord, but to demons, to stones that could not speak, to wood that could not breathe. Under every spreading tree, beside every bubbling stream, they bowed before idols carved by human hands.

*”You have made your bed with them,”* the Lord declared. *”You have loved their embrace more than Mine.”*

Their children were offered in fire, their vows sworn to gods who could not save. They climbed the highest mountains, seeking revelation, but found only emptiness. They whispered their prayers into the wind, but no answer came.

### **The Lord’s Judgment and the Call to Repentance**

Then the voice of the Lord shook the earth:

*”Whom have you mocked? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!”*

Their idols would not save them in the day of wrath. The wind would carry them away like chaff, and their false gods would crumble to dust. But even in His fury, the heart of the Lord yearned for His people.

*”I have seen your ways,”* He declared, *”but I will heal you; I will lead you and restore comfort to you.”*

For the Lord does not delight in the death of the wicked, but longs for them to turn and live. To the contrite and humble, He promised peace—true peace, not as the world gives, but as only He can bestow.

### **The Promise of Restoration**

*”I dwell in the high and holy place,”* says the Lord, *”but also with the one who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the heart of the humble.”*

Though their sins were as scarlet, He would make them white as snow. Though they had run far from Him, He would bring them home. The barren would sing; the desolate would bloom like a garden refreshed by rain.

But to the wicked, there would be no rest. Like a turbulent sea, they would toss and turn, finding no peace, for their hearts were far from God.

### **The Choice Set Before Them**

The prophet’s words hung in the air, heavy with warning and sweet with promise. The people stood at the crossroads—would they cling to their idols and perish, or return to the Lord and live?

For the High and Lofty One, whose name is Holy, had spoken. And His word would not return void.
