Unfulfilled Journeys: Moses’ Last View of the Promised Land

Once there lived a great servant of God named Moses. Long devoted to serving his God and his people, Moses had seen many sights and claimed many victories in his journey. He was known all across the land as the man who had led his fellow Hebrews out of Egypt’s shackles and into the freedom they had prayed for. The story of Moses approaching the edge of the Promised Land is woven in the tapestry of Deuteronomy 34.

According to the celestial plans, however, Moses was destined not to enter the Promised Land. As he stood on Mount Nebo and peered unto the lands ahead, he must have felt a myriad of emotions. To the west, was the city of Jericho, while to the south, he could glimpse the placid waters of the Dead Sea. It was a sight to behold. He looked upon this fruitful, beautiful land, a vision that had often comforted him in darker days. It was a land of green fields and thriving communities, a land promised by God to his people, as well his ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Moses’ heart would have swelled with joy and sadness. God had allowed him this glimpse of the future, but also made it clear that this was where Moses’ journey would end. Like a fervent dreamer on the cusp of his dream, Moses was given the challenging task of basking in oncoming victory’s glow, yet not being able to touch its fruits. He had given his life to this cause, led his people through the harsh wilderness, and now he was to end his days on the margins of the Promised Land. But he did not question nor did he challenge. He accepted God’s will with the same faith and courage that had steered him until now.

When the moment came, Moses peacefully passed away on the solitary peaks of Mount Nebo. His death was shrouded with mystery. There was no funeral. No family or follower knew of his passing until after it was done. They mourned for thirty days, their hearts heavy with loss. The man who had led them out of Egypt, who had brought them to the threshold of their new home, was no more. Yet in their sorrow, there was a light of gratitude for all that Moses had done for them.

Joshua, the apprentice of Moses stood up to the challenge of filling the void left by his master. He was filled with a wisdom reminiscent of Moses, having the spirit of leadership. Thus, he was chosen to take the reins from the revered leader. Despite his young age, everyone noticed a familiar echo of their departed leader in his words and postures. His determination was fierce and his faith unwavering. Inspired by his dedication, the people prepared themselves to step forth into the promising future that lay ahead.

Ever since the death of Moses, no prophet had risen in Israel like him, for the Lord used to speak to him face to face. He was unmatched in all the signs and wonders that the Lord had sent him to do in Egypt, against Pharaoh and his servants, and his land. The great might, and all the dread acts that Moses performed in the sight of Israel, made him a timeless figure in the Hebrew history.

And so, it came to paPass proud legacy, the life Moses lived, and the vision that he worked towards was carried forward by Joshua and his fellow Israelites. It was not just a land that Moses had espied from Mount Nebo; it was a vision of hope, of possibility, and of a future filled with God’s blessings. Although he had not stepped on its nourishing soil, he had laid a solid path that would lead his followers to it. In his death, Moses became a beacon guiding his people towards their destined future. His spirit still echoed among them, serving as a reminder of God’s promises and their own powerful capabilities.
