Once upon a time, Amos, a humble herdsman from Tekoa, stood before the people of Israel. His words carried the weight and authority of divine prophecy. Amos declared, “Jehovah will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem. The pastures of shepherds will mourn, and the lush vegetation of Carmel will wither.” The people felt a great shudder of fear in their hearts as they contemplated the wrath of Jehovah. But this was just the beginning of the message.

Amos went on, “Jehovah will not ignore the sins of Damascus. They have committed great sin, threshing Gilead with instruments of iron. Jehovah will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the palaces of Ben-hadad. The bar of Damascus will be broken, its inhabitants will be cut off. The people of Syria will go into captivity unto Kir.” The crowd gasped, sobered at the thought of the impending doom.

Amos continued with his prophesies, declaring a divine judgement on Gaza, “Because they enslaved a whole nation and delivered them to Edom. But Jehovah will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod and turn my hand against Ekron. The remnant of the Philistines will perish,” echoed Amos.

The prophesies continued, as he spoke of Tyre, Edom, and the children of Ammon, each facing the wrath of Jehovah for their transgressions. Tyre was condemned for forgetting the bond of brotherhood, Edom for perpetuating endless cycles of violence, and the children of Ammon for ripping up pregnant women in their greed to enlarge their border.

The judgement on each was the same: fire, destruction, and exile. Each time, the final words from Amos’s lips were, “Saith Jehovah.” The crowd felt the power of those words, serving a chilling reminder that these were not threats, but promises from Jehovah.

Thus, the humble shepherd of Tekoa stood before the kings and revealed the price of disobedience, the consequences of evil, and inevitably of divine judgment. His prophecies demonstrated Jehovah’s omniscience and omnipotence, showing that all would face divine retribution for their wrongdoings. His words transformed from a shepherd’s humble speech into a divinely inspired warning that echoed across the lands, leaving a chilling sense of anticipation in its wake.
